The primary objective with any liquid/solids process is to intimately distribute the liquid droplets throughout the solid materials so that the individual solid particles receive equal amounts of liquids. The traditional method of liquid injection introduces the liquid into the vessel by gravity. Uneven distribution of the liquid tends to saturate some of the material. Excess liquids must be added to insure minimum coverage of all particles.

Liquid-Solids
In a Gemco Tumble Blender or Dryer, liquids can be efficiently blended with solids up to 75%, depending on solids absorption. This method of blending is suitable for intimate dispersions of liquids to solids, extension of pigments, flavorings and odors, and breakdown of lumps or agglomeration of particles. The Gemco Liquid Solids Agitator is similar to the High-Speed Agitator. The agitator drive shaft is hollow to form a passageway for liquids and the agitator disc is split to form a radial crack for a fine mist of liquid to exit under high-speed rotation.

Liquids can be injected into Gemco equipment utilizing one of the two following methods.

Standard Gravity Feed
This system is best suited for injection of water like liquids of 5% to 20% injection ratios. Liquids are introduced into the vessel by way of centrifugal action between apertures in the agitator disc assembly.

Airless Spray
The airless spray design is much more versatile in operation than the standard dispersion disc design. The airless spray system has fewer restrictions, offering finer atomization of liquids (to 6 microns) for extended coatings and/or a more closely controlled granulation size range.

This design also allows for greater flexibility in load levels. It is not uncommon to have a successful liquid addition at load levels down to 50% of the rated capacity. This design does not automatically require an agitator bar.

Precision Granulations
When used as the liquid injection device in Gemco formulators and blenders, airless spray provides highly uniform granulations. Precise droplet size control guarantees the consistency of the process, time after time.

Spray On The Product
Since the nozzle only sprays down on the product, there is no liquid spray-through to the walls. Caked material on the discs is eliminated. Active ingredients in the spray are not lost in the cake.

  • Produces liquid droplets as small as 6 microns.
  • Provides precise control over liquid amounts down to tenths of an ounce.
  • Can be equipped with heaters to liquefy solid materials.
